TECHNOLOGY A CONSTITUENT INSTITUTE OF HAMDARD UNIVERSITY
Usman Institute of Technology was established
as a project of Usman Memorial Foundation in 1994 in
collaboration with Technical University Nova Scotia (now Dal-Tec),
a very well reputed Institution of Engineering Education in
Canada. Subsequently it became a constituent Institution of
Hamdard University under an agreement between UMF & Hamdard
University in 1997.
UIT is a
not-for-profit, distinguished academic institution. It
prepares engineers and technologists who have the character
and skills to serve the country’s requirements. UIT offers
Engineering programs in Electronic Engineering, Computer
Systems Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering and
Industrial Electronics along with a four year BS in
Computer Science. The Department of Computer Science is also
launching four year degree programme in the areas of:
Software Development
Telecommunication & Networking
Management & Information Systems &
Multimedia & Digital Arts
from Fall 2010.
In less than a decade, UIT has earned a name
in the academic circles of the city and has produced over
1500 engineering and computer science graduates who have
carried its good name in several corners of the world. Later
in 2005, Master’s programme in Engineering and Computer
Science were launched and 169 students have been awarded
Master’s degree by Hamdard University. At the moment ME
(Engineering) degree of Hamdard University are awarded in
the following disciplines:
Telecommunication
Communication & Signal Processing
Industrial Controls and Automation &
Computer Systems Engineering
Whereas MS is awarded in:
Computer Networks & Communication
Software Engineering &
Mobile Computing & Information Systems.
UIT is located at Abul
Hasan Isphahani Road, opposite Safari Park Karachi. It is
equipped with comfortable classrooms, modern labs and an up
to date Library. UIT is supported by four Information
Processing Centres having over 292 workstations. A Local
Area Network is operational for resource sharing and
efficient computing.
UIT has signed
Memoranda of Understanding with Purdue University (USA) and
with the University of Portsmouth (UK) for Faculty and
students exchange programmes. The credits earned at UIT
shall be counted towards the degree requirements of both
institutions under conditions, thus reducing the cost of
earning degrees at internationally recognized universities
in America and Great Britain. The credits earned at UIT are
normally accepted by all internationally recognized
institutions.
Usman Institute of Technology started with 56
students in the first intake in January 1995. The present
strength of Engineering students is 1074. 174 students are
enrolled in Computer Science faculty in Fall 2009 for a
four-year BS degree programme. Till December 2009, 1513
students have graduated and have been awarded Hamdard
University Degrees.
The regular faculty consists of 46 teachers,
many of them with educational qualifications from
prestigious foreign universities and it is headed by Dr.
Prof. Muhammad Waseem Akhtar, formerly Director, Institute
of Space & Planetary Astrophysics (ISPA), University of
Karachi & former Professor of Department of Physics,
University of Karachi.
UIT is governed by an
Executive Board, comprising distinguished members of the
industrial, commercial and educational segment of the elite
of the Province of Sind. Dr. (Prof.) Manzoor Ahmad, Ex-Vice
Chancellor Hamdard University & Former Rector International
Islamic University, Islamabad, is the life Chairman of the
Executive Board.
UIT is following the
norms of higher education set by the Higher Education
Commission of Pakistan and is accredited to Pakistan
Engineering Council. Several faculty members at UIT are
engaged in research and are publishing their papers in
prestigious journals both in Pakistan and abroad. Several
passed out graduates of UIT students joined prestigious
universities in USA, Canada, UK etc. Quite a few have
returned to Pakistan and joined various organizations
including UIT.
