Academic Regulations Concerning Promotion

Passing the Semester


A student, who meets the following conditions, is considered passed in the semester and is promoted to the next semester.
  • Student must not have less than 40% marks both in sessional and lab work.
  • Student must pass the End Semester Exams & Lab Exam separately with a minimum of 40% marks.
  • Student does not get F grade in any course.
  • Student’s GPA is not less than 2.00.
  • A student who has passed, is not allowed to register and / or reappear in any course of that semester.

Getting Promoted on Probation

  • A student gets promoted on probation to the next semester if he fulfills both of the following conditions:
    a) student does not get F grade in more than 2 courses.
    b) student GPA is not less than 1.50 in that semester.
  • If a student fails to get the required pass marks in sessionals, he/she will not be allowed to appear in the final
    semester examination and will be required to repeat the said course whenever offered or available.
  • Similarly if a student does not get the required pass marks in Lab work separately, he/she will be required to repeat
    the lab work.
  • A student securing Grade B or above in any course is not allowed to reappear for improvement in that course.
  • If a student fails to appear in the end semester examination, he/she will be awarded ‘F’ grade.

Getting Relegated

  • Relegation means that a student has to recommence his studies from an appropriate lower semester.
  • A student is relegated in case:
    a) student obtains 3 or more F grades in the current semester.
    b) student’s current GPA is less than 1.50.
  • If a student is relegated in a semester, he / she is required to repeat all courses in which he/she has secured a "D"
    or "F". However, he/she is also allowed to repeat courses in which he/she secured a "C".

Preparation of Grade Sheet (for relegated students)

The grade sheet prepared by the Examination Department of UIT for a relegated student will show the student's performance in every subject taken before and subsequent to relegation.

Fee to be paid on Probation / Relegation

  • A student promoted on probation shall pay full fee of the semester.
  • A student promoted on probation, desirous of attending any course of the previous semester shall also pay the fee of the extra course he is attending.
  • A student re-appearing in the examination of the previous semester shall only pay the examination fee of the course.
  • A relegated student will pay the fee only for the courses in which he/ she has to register.
Conditions of Registration in Higher Semesters of B.E. & BS

A student registering in 5th semester and in subsequent semesters is to ensure that he/she has cleared all the subjects of previous semester as shown below:

Cleared all subjects of 2nd semester with 2.00 GPA
In 7th semester
Cleared all subjects of 3rd semester with 2.00 GPA
In 8th semester
Cleared all subjects of 4th semester with 2.00 GPA

 

Suspension / Cancellation
  • A student may be suspended if:
    a) in any semester, he / she obtains more than two F’s or his / her semester GPA is less than 1.50.
    b) he / she is unlikely to improve the grade and is found unsuitable for further study.

  • A student who is suspended may opt for voluntary relegation. In this case he will be exempted from those courses in which he obtained A, B and C grades.

  • If a student does not opt for voluntary relegation, his registration with UIT shall stand cancelled.
